Backyard Ambiance in North Vancouver
This backyard lighting project in North Vancouver’s Capilano Highlands neighbourhood was designed to transform the outdoor space into something that feels usable, comfortable, and visually engaging after dark.
The homeowners wanted lighting that could feel warm and natural for everyday evenings, while still offering the ability to create a more dramatic atmosphere when entertaining. To achieve this, we designed a system that provides soft white light most of the time, with the option to introduce colour when desired. When used in white light mode, the backyard looks and feels like a traditionally lit landscape, with gentle illumination highlighting trees, planting beds, and the overall structure of the space.
Mature trees and layered landscaping were lit from below to add depth and separation, helping the backyard feel larger and more immersive at night. Each fixture was carefully aimed to avoid harsh brightness and glare, allowing the light to blend naturally into the environment rather than stand out.
Low profile lighting was also integrated into the steps and hardscape areas to improve safety and visibility while keeping the design clean and unobtrusive. These details make the backyard easier to navigate after dark without drawing attention away from the surrounding landscape.
What makes this project unique is the flexibility built into the system. On a typical evening, the lighting remains subtle and refined. When the homeowners want to change the mood for gatherings or special occasions, colour can be introduced to completely transform the space without any physical changes to the fixtures. The result is a backyard that feels calm and inviting most of the time, yet capable of becoming vibrant and expressive when the moment calls for it.
This project shows how thoughtful backyard lighting can enhance both the function and character of a home, creating an outdoor space that adapts seamlessly to different moods, seasons, and ways of living.
